Hibikubo Shrine
History
Dating back over 800 years, Hebikubo Shrine is believed to have been founded during the Kamakura period, a time when shrines and temples flourished under the rule of the shogunate. The shrine is dedicated to Susanoo-no-Mikoto, the god of storms and seas, revered for his power to ward off evil spirits and natural disasters. Locals continue to pray here for protection and peace, keeping alive traditions that have been passed down for generations.
Folklore
One of the most unique aspects of Hebikubo Shrine is its connection to local legends. The shrine's name, which translates to “Snake Cave Shrine,” is said to originate from an ancient myth involving a snake deity that once dwelled in the surrounding forest. It is said that the deity protected the area from calamities, and the shrine was erected to honor and maintain the spirit's protection over the region.
