Tenso Shrine

天祖神社
It is said that Tenso Shrine was first held in the old Sugamo Village (almost half of present-day Toshima Ward, Sugamo, Nishi-Sugamo, Kita-Otsuka, Minami-Otsuka, Higashi-Ikebukuro 2-5-chome, and Kami-Ikebukuro 1-chome) at the end of the Kamakura period when the lord Toyoshima welcomed the gods of the Imperial Grand Shrine of Ise. Until the name was changed to Tenso Shrine in Meiji 6, it was called Shinmeisha / Shinmeigu, and in the Edo period, the Jura Shrine was also enshrined in the precincts.
